Campaigners battling to preserve a Halesowen conservation site from redevelopment have won the backing of local councillors. Halesowen North ward member Jeffrey Hill is one who has vowed to fight.
Councillor Hill is pledged against plans to move the Coombs Wood Sports and Social Club site to nearby fields - which form part of the Coombs Wood Green Wedge.
St Modwen wants to sell the club for housing and rebuild it on the green wedge which is a designated Site of Importance for Nature Conservation.
Although the developers have consulted local residents about the plans, they have not yet submitted an application for planning permission.
But angry residents have already formed a Friends group and started a petition against any development on the green wedge.
They say the site should be protected as it is home to an abundance of valuable wildlife such as bats, owls, and rare butterflies.
Councillor Hill said: "All the three ward councillors are opposed to the sports club moving onto the green wedge. Once the application has been submitted we will be fighting it.
"The Green Wedge is one of the few remaining pieces of greenbelt in the area. It is a protected green break between Birmingham and Halesowen."
Plans are expected to be submitted in June.
